Feb. 21, 2005 - Ajax Real Estate Profile: Located only 40 minutes east of Toronto, Ajax is a safe and friendly bedroom community. With over 465 acres of parkland and natural areas throughout town, including small neighbourhood parks, it is an ideal place to raise children. Situated on the shores of Lake Ontario, Ajax boasts the longest natural waterfront in the Toronto area.

Many of the roads in Ajax are named after the crew and officers of a World War II Royal Navy ship, the HMS Ajax. The intersection of Hardwood Ave. and Bayly St. make up the centre of downtown.

Over the next five years, about 500 new homes are expected to be built every year in Ajax. More than 225 hectares of free land is selected for new homes. There are already dozens of attractive developments. Three bedroom houses can range anywhere from $188,000 to $1,000,000 by the water.

Most of the elementary and secondary schools in Ajax are administered by the Durham District School Board and the Durham Catholic District School Board. French schools are run by Le Conseil scolaire de district du Centre-Sud-Ouest and Le Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud. There are also Montessori and private schools in the community.

Ajax is also home to the Diamond Institute of Business and Computer Technology and Durham Business and Computer College. Nearby in Oshawa, there is the Durham College of Applied Arts and Technology, and the Durham Business and Computer College in Pickering.

Ajax has two community centres. The Ajax Community Centre has four arenas, a 25-metre swimming pool, a squash club, a fitness centre, a rock climbing facility, a preschool room, a youth games room and a Judo Club. Outside there is the Cricket Club pitch and pavilion, eight public tennis courts, soccer fields and a skateboard park.

The McLean Community Centre also has a 25-metre pool, as well as a tot pool, whirlpool and sauna. A branch of the public library is here, as well as a banquet hall. The centre also holds fitness classes, a snack bar, a preschool, a babysitting service for members, a gymnasium, a youth centre, a skateboard park, art displays and the Durham Regional Police Centre.

The Sportsplex in town has five ball diamonds, two soccer pitches, playgrounds and parkland and trails. On top of all this, Ajax has numerous golf courses to keep the avid golfer entertained.
